Well used and worn ties would benefit from a pre-soaking in just an India Ink and Alcohol mix, this leaves them a quite washed out gray. After glued down and before laying the rails, you can take a light wash of some blacks and browns (really thinned - 90% thinner, 10% color) and randomly darken up some of the ties to show periodic maintenance and replacement.

If you've already laid in the track, then a light coat of gray paint (automotive primer gray works well), followed by several light applications of the India Ink and Alcohol will dress the whole thing off quite nice. Brush (really fine brush) the rails sides and bases with brown and rust shades - more random strengths of the brown and rust gives a better appearance.

Mix up several strengths of India Ink and Alcohol. A light mix with 1 tsp ink to a pint of alcohol, a medium with 2 tsp, and a heavy with 3-4 tsp. Browns and blacks can be made up with shoe dye and alcohol, or your favorite paints really thinned down to a wash.

I estimate I have about 5 pounds of coupler springs somewhere in the vicinity of my workbench.
