I plan to build my own turnouts. N Scale. Now wondering what size I should get. On my last layout I used #6 (Peco) and had no issues but I'm wondering:

1) For Mainline, should I go with something larger, like #8?

2) For yard ladders, should I go with something smaller, like #4.

I've been thinking of going with #6 and #8. Or, are these close enough together that it wouldn't really make too much difference. Or should I just abandon the idea of 2 different sizes and just go with #6?

I'm doing a 4 X 8 layout, then one that is 7 X 13 or so.

Whatever you fancy.

But ......... 1:9 is the sharpest point regularly used on the old continent and has a topspeed of 40 km/h diverting.

On the other hand ........ 1:9 looks overly long on a model layout.

So hence my answer: whatever you fancy
