I've been building Code 40 turnouts using the PC board ties from Fast Tracks. I have a #69 pilot hole drilled in the throw bar and intend to use Tortoise switch machines.

1) Should I replace the throw wire that comes with the Tortoise machines with smaller wirer so that I don't have to enlarge the pilot hole, and,

2) If I do keep the current size hole, does anyone know where I could purchase replacement wire? Would piano wire work?

In advance, my thanks
Dave

Smaller wire will give you less spring tension.

I needed to use different wire because the Tortoise-supplied wire was too short. I used ordinary piano wire, but I used a heavier gauge than the Tortoise wire.

Check this thread as well.
