Are the ties required for switches? As my staging yard will require about 20 switches I was wondering are the wooden ties required, as I think PCB ties will provide the strength. Am I correct?

Yes and No. The PC ties provide the fixed geometry and give position to the critical dimensions. However, the rails also need a horizontal support - especially under the stress of rail cleaning actions. You can add a few more PC ties to give greater strength and support of the trail bases - but just putting some extra wooden ties will be just as well - provided the wood ties are the same height as the PC ties. The track needs good solid support to keep from becoming 'wavy'. That does not mean the ties as placed for cosmetic and appearance purposes are all required in a staging area.

I estimate I have about 5 pounds of coupler springs somewhere in the vicinity of my workbench.
