Does anyone know of what rules were applied to have rail lines heading to a prairie grain elevator?

Obviously the main line would need extra sidings added to handle the boxcars used by the elevator. My query is whether one such branch sufficed or would two be more accurate?

Also, if there were two or more elevators, would a different arrangement of branch lines (sidings) be required?

In terms of spacing, how far would two elevators be apart?

Such historical information, or links thereto, would be great.
