Post subject:  #8 double slip switch

I have the number eight double slip code 83 crossover jig. I also have the builders guide on building a double slip switch. I am wondering if there is a difference between building a number eight and a number six. The number eight has two slots for longer PC ties in the middle. The quick sticks even have space for these longer ties. The builders guide does not mention this because it shows how to build a number six double slept only. I know most of the construction is the same, but I am wondering about those two longer ties in the center of the turnout.
I was wondering what they were therefore and should I use them for any movable points?

The number 8 DS uses center moving points, whereas the number 6 has a fixed center crossing oblique frog. You will need to use the slots for the moving points.

Where can I find information regarding the instruction of these center points? I downloaded the PDF booklet on building a DS switch and it shows only the #6. Se there any pictures posted of a #8 DS being built? Any help is appreciated.

There used to be a users guide (UG05) for double slips #8 and larger that described the moving center points process - but alas, that is no longer available. In the "After Hours Modeling" section of the web site (linked from the video part of the the documents section), there is a video guide "Building Short, Hinged Switch Points" that shows the technique for constructing very short points like what is required for the number 8 double slip. This video is a 'casual sampler' - without any careful descriptions. Two points to observe - 1) you absolutely must thoroughly clean the spike heads before soldering, and 2) be sure and NOT have any copper foil in the areas where the moving part of the points are soldered (this also includes where the electrical wire is attached on the moving side).

Moving center points double slips are tedious to construct, but like all hand-built trackwork, careful and patient effort will bring an excellent result.
