I like the twist ties for TO's, CO'S but have no experience hand laying track.
I can use the ties for any radius - curved or straight as described online.
All wood trackwork and without soldering too!
What's the best roadbed to use?
I'm guessing homosote over 1/2 " ply to hold spikes.

From my own experience the type of roadbed actually doesn't make any difference at all. The ties themselves are what actually grip and hold the spikes n place. If you are using standard HO scale cork roadbed the spikes do not penetrate through the ties and cork into the underlying material anyway. I had laid some track and the module it was on then sat in an non environmentally controlled garage for about a year before I got back to it. There was no ballast to hold things in place so the only forces keeping things in place were the ties being glued to the cork and 4 spikes in each ties. There was absolutely zero evidence that the track had moved at all even through massive changes in temperature and humidity that had occurred over the course of that year it sat.

That's good info, thanks. I could do without the homosote mess,
Expense and xtra work, too.

I have heard many a good and bad thing about Homasote for roadbeds.

Ready to use is costly, make your own is messy.

Some swear by it, other swear at it! :P

Take your pick.
