Folks, I am new to the idea and am really thinking of buying these after having some troubles with atlas turnouts. I guess I should say not really new to the idea, some years ago I saw their booth in Michigan in the NMRA national show. I just remember how amazed I was at how smooth they were. My biggest problem is the loss of power in the frog of the atlas turnouts.

I took a time out from the hobby, but I am now back with the kids invovled. Everyone here locally uses shinohara turnouts. Anyhow now to my question is do I have to use ME flex track since you use ME rail to built the turnouts?

You can use any flex track. The ME rail is best . . . but when joining to other rails, you MAY have to do some filing and fitting at the joint.

I estimate I have about 5 pounds of coupler springs somewhere in the vicinity of my workbench.

Mike,

You also don't have to use ME rail for the FastTracks fixtures. You can order the fixtures setup for any particular rail you choose. Caution, though . . . once ordered as such, then only that rail choice will 'accurately' work. Some rail profiles are exceedingly different than others. The ME rail is by far the most accurate and realistic rail profile. There is full interchange with the fixtures in using code 83 or code 70 rails. (In fact order the code 70 fixture for use with code 83 rail - it works even better).
