#1. Radio Shack sells a product called Solder Wick.
Solder Wick comes on a small roll. Its a web type
product that you place on the unwanted solder and
then Heat with your soldering Iron and it wicks the
excess solder off of where ever you place it.
It is great for removing lumps and puddles you don't
want. After you use the wick you then cut off the used
portion and use the the new area price is about $1.50
per roll.

#2. Radio Shack also sells what is Called a Desoldering Pump.
this has unlimited uses and can be used thousands of times.
It works by suction. first you heat the unwanted solder you want
removed then press the long plunger in and place the tip on the
opposite end of the tool over the melted solder then press the
small button on the side of the tool to activate the suction and
the solder is sucked up into the plunger cavity. After 20 or 30
puddles are sucked up you unscrew the plunger section and dump
the removed solder in the trash.

My favorite Small tool company Micro Mark also sells the Desoldering
Pump for about $6.00 U.S.

The product number for the Pump at Micro Mark is #83865
the on line address is :

these are the same people that sell Tix anti-Flux as well as hundreds
of small tools for the Model railroader.
Ask them for a free catalog this is a reference everyone using Fast Tracks
should have.

The cleaning of the hot iron is also well served by a Radio Shack product labeled "Tip Tinner and Cleaner" (#64-020). I have also used a fine brass wire brush, combined with a wet damp sponge for cleaning while hot, and be sure to re-tin with fresh solder. Truly corroded solid tips that are not plated can be rejuvenated first by filing, then tinning. The plated tips, once corroded have to be replaced. Good cleaning and and tinning practices allow the solder iron tips to last a very long time.

I estimate I have about 5 pounds of coupler springs somewhere in the vicinity of my workbench.
