I am working in O Scale and code 148 rail. The 35 and a 45 watt unit isn't melding the solder properly. I tried using the resistence unit yesterday and it seems to work well. Any one have any suggestions or experiences using this type of unit? I am using the probe but it seems a bit large.

Hello Jay,

The nice thing about resistance soldering when using the tweezer tip is that you can hold the rail down firmly on the PC board tie, hit the foot pedal for a few seconds to create the bond and then continue to hold the rail down while the joint cools for a few seconds and thereby avoid any cold solder joints. I still use an acid paste flux and put some on top of each PC board tie where the rail will sit and this seems to draw the solder between the rail and tie for a nice neat finish.

Since I began using my resistance soldering station I've become somewhat spoiled and seldom use my soldering iron except to solder the points to the throwbar. I tried using the resistance station to make this joint but it had a tendency to "blacken" the point before the joint was complete (too much heat).

I highly recommend using a resistance soldering station for making quick, clean joints.

Terry

I can understand using the tweezer tips when soldering the frog rails. But on piece of rail to a PC ties you just squeeze the tips on the rail while holding it down on the tie and both get hot enough to melt the solder just because the heat passing through the rail?

Thanks

Jay

Hi Jay,

That's correct, heat applied to the rail is sufficient.

how well does the aluminium jig and the current combine?

It seems to work just fine. I attach the ground to the plate itself in most cases
