Hello Tim and Ron, I'm not a machinest but the idea I had to make a stock rail grinding jig envolved using a version of your new point grinding jig. You would have the same block of steel, and the rail would seat in the jig at a consistent distance from the side, code 40 on one side 55 on the other, The slot for the rail would go to both ends so you could slide the rail in from either end to make a left or right rail. The hard part, (remembering I'm not a machinest) is to cut the steel block so you could file off a inch and a half of the rail side. I was thinking that a possibility would be to have a 1.5 inch groove in the steel block grinded vertically from the top of the tool to the bottom. a 1 or 2 degree angle could be set while machining. As far as taper goes, since its 1.5 inches long the modeler can or could accomplish that with careful filing. Since the rail would be held firmly in the tool it shouldn't be difficult. I dont know the difficulties in setting up or machining a tool like these, so take them with grain of salt. Just an idea, perhaps it will bear fruit. Rob |
