I just got a jig from our club that is marked "HO Code 83 Atlas". I'm assuming this is an older product that was made for Atlas track and won't be compatible with ME code 83 right? I was not around when the club layout was constructed.

Atlas code 83 rail is a larger profile and the base especially is wider. It is not directly compatible for use of ME rail.

You could use the fixture - but like all mixed construction, you would need to use railhead gauges while constructing. You would also have to be very careful with the frog construction - use a NMRA gauge for the flangeway.

I estimate I have about 5 pounds of coupler springs somewhere in the vicinity of my workbench.

Thanks Ed. As this will be my first foray into handlaying track, I think I'll use Atlas track in it. I was planning on using Atlas code 100 with Atlas turnouts in my staging yard, but maybe I'll build the switches with this jig and Atlas code 83 rail instead, and then use Atlas code 83 for the staging tracks. I'm planning on ME track for the visible portions of the layout (code 83/70) so this will be good practice. I need 11 #6 switches in staging. This jig will cut back on expenses considerably!

Good choices. Atlas in staging and hidden is a practical way and less expensive approach. You really don't need code 100 though in any location - except that it is of course universally cheaper for the flex track. With just a little skill and practice, you can transition from the code 83 to the flex track code 100 rather easily.
